McDonald’s Napkin to Design Award Behind CASEKOO’s Magic Stand Phone Case

By: Jason Hughes

In 2017, Ralph Ye was trying to watch a video on his phone while eating at McDonald’s. His makeshift solution, propping his device against a drink, failed repeatedly, sending his phone clattering onto the table. That moment of frustration led to a napkin sketch that would eventually become CASEKOO‘s Magic Stand, a flush-mounted ring that rotates 360 degrees and allows users to position their phones at angles.

The company’s philosophy marks a change in how people interact with their devices. For years, phone cases were purely practical, designed to protect expensive technology from drops and bumps, but as smartphones have become extensions of identities, consumers increasingly want accessories that express personality as well.

Ye’s McDonald’s epiphany did not immediately translate into business success. The entrepreneur, who had a background in financial services and technology sales, spent four years developing what would become the Magic Stand technology. His first product line, launched in 2017, was a crystal-clear phone case made from TPU material that established the company’s “Quality First” philosophy but did not yet include the kickstand feature that would define the brand.

The breakthrough came in 2021 with the E Line, which CASEKOO claims was the world’s first phone case with an integrated ring stand. This product earned the company its first iF Design Award, one of the most prestigious design recognitions globally, organized in Germany since 1953.

The Magic Stand technology serves multiple functions seamlessly integrated into a single product. The ring stand integrates into the phone case’s back panel, maintaining a clean aesthetic when not in use. It provides 360-degree rotation, maintains strong magnetic functionality compatible with MagSafe accessories, and functions as a secure grip for one-handed phone use.

The phone case market that CASEKOO entered is valued at $16.41 billion in 2025, expected to grow to $20.70 billion by 2029 at a compound annual growth rate of 6.0 percent. The company identifies its primary competitors as Case-Mate, CaseBang, and Casetify, all established brands known for design-focused products.

CASEKOO is distinguished in this crowded market by its recent switch to design-forward products. While competitors like Casetify have always emphasized fashion and aesthetics, CASEKOO began with functionality and has only recently entered the designer case market.

Charlotte Yu, who represents the brand, explained during a recent interview that the company’s approach has changed significantly. “Before last year, our style was basically the basic case, the basic magic stand without any designs. We were trying to focus on the function of the phone case. But last year, our director started thinking, ‘why can’t I have some designs on the phone case?’”

CASEKOO’s market performance demonstrates the potential for function-first brands to capture significant market share. The company sold 1.6 million phone cases on Amazon in the past year, achieving “Amazon top cases sales” status. The global user base has reached 17 million across more than 20 countries, suggesting that the appeal of functional phone accessories transcends cultural boundaries.

The company’s achievement of iF Design Awards in both 2023 and 2025 validates its claim that good design does not require choosing between form and function. These awards carry weight in the design community and help establish credibility in a market where aesthetics are valued.

The company’s latest developments include what Yu calls “playing with the magic stand.” In an interview, he emphasized that focus is just as important as function. “We’re not just trying to show how this works functionally—we also want it to be fun and engaging,” he explained.

CASEKOO’s journey began with the simple frustration of trying to prop up a phone while sitting in a McDonald’s. That moment sparked the need for smarter tech solutions. Sometimes, the most successful products are those that solve everyday problems—ones everyone experiences, but no one has taken the time to address properly.

The next time you struggle to prop up your phone to watch a video, remember that someone else’s identical frustration led to a multimillion-unit business. The best ideas often hide in plain sight.
