Homeowners around Missoula rarely shop for electrical work the way they shop for furniture. The job usually shows up as a problem. A breaker trips every time the space heater runs, a kitchen remodel stalls because nobody has run the new circuits, or power stops reaching the shop out back with the fault buried somewhere under the lawn.

Picking a Missoula electrician under that kind of pressure means sorting through a field of companies that describe themselves in nearly identical language. The sameness is the real obstacle. Montana requires a state license for electrical work, so being licensed does not set one contractor apart from the next.

What separates them is harder to see from a homepage. It comes down to the kinds of projects a company takes on week after week, the diagnostic equipment riding in the van, and whether the person holding the license is accountable for what gets installed.

Why Montana Puts Electrical Work in Licensed Hands

Electrical licensing in the state runs through the Montana State Electrical Board, housed within the Department of Labor and Industry. The board issues residential, journeyman, and master electrician credentials along with limited and unlimited licenses for electrical contractors. Contractor licensing carries a condition that matters to anyone hiring a company rather than an individual. An applicant must identify a full-time Montana-licensed journeyman or master electrician responsible for all work performed in the state, and journeyman renewals call for 16 hours of board-approved continuing education per cycle, at least 8 of them on code updates.

That framework exists because wiring failures hide. A loose connection or an undersized conductor gets sealed behind drywall, and the consequences surface months later as heat, arcing, or a circuit that quietly dies. Permitted and inspected work also tends to matter down the road, when a house changes hands or an insurer starts asking questions. Every Missoula electrician working legally in Montana operates inside that structure, whether the job is a single outlet or a full residential build.

How Does a Missoula Electrician Find Buried Wiring Faults?

Underground faults rank among the more stubborn problems in residential electrical work, because the failure point is invisible and the search area can be an entire yard. Contacting 811 comes first, before any excavation. The national call-before-you-dig service notifies affected utility owners, who send locators out to mark the approximate position of buried lines with paint or flags.

Those marks cover utility-owned infrastructure. Conductors a property owner ran themselves, out to a barn, a well pump, or a detached garage, generally sit outside that scope.

Specialized instruments fill the gap. Lloyd Electric works with a Leica DD130 underground locator and exterior frequency kit to trace the route and depth of buried conductors, along with a Tempo Communications PE 2003-G pulser and ground fault locator to narrow down where insulation has broken. The pulser drives a signal into the damaged line while a receiver tracks it from the surface, and the reading shifts at the break.

What the homeowner sees is a small, targeted dig rather than a trench cut across the yard. For a Missoula electrician working rural parcels with long service runs and outbuildings, that distinction comes up often. It also changes how a job gets quoted, since a contractor who has to guess at a fault location prices in the guesswork.

Three Kinds of Jobs Behind One Family Business

Family-owned and operated, Lloyd Electric, LLC works out of Frenchtown and serves Missoula County and neighboring communities. The company sorts its work into new construction, remodels, and service calls, and the differences between the three run deeper than scale.

New builds mean designing and installing every system from the panel outward, coordinating with framers and inspectors on a schedule that leaves little room for rework. Remodels invert the problem. Existing wiring has to be traced, measured against current standards, and tied into new circuits without disturbing what already works. Kitchen projects appear frequently in the company’s project gallery, alongside heated floor installations and light fixture work.

Service calls cover everything else, from electrical panel and circuit breaker replacement to outlet repair, rewiring in older homes, security and soffit lighting, and dimmer installation. Commercial properties bring a different set of constraints, where an outage interrupts revenue instead of dinner. Lloyd Electric handles both residential and commercial electrical services across its service area.

What Should Homeowners Ask Before Work Starts?

The most useful question is also the least commonly asked. Who is the licensed electrician of record on this job, and will that person be on site? Any Missoula electrician working under a contractor license should be able to answer directly, because the license structure requires it.

Insurance is the second area worth clarifying. Lloyd Electric describes itself as an insured electrician and electrical contractor, a standard protection homeowners look for before anyone opens a panel. Permitting and inspection make up the third, particularly on panel upgrades and added circuits.

Cost timing deserves a question too. The company notes that flexible payment and financing options are available, which can matter on larger installations where the full bill arrives at once.

A Frenchtown Shop With a Wide Service Radius

Frenchtown sits northwest of Missoula along the Clark Fork, which puts the company’s crews within reach of both the city and the rural properties spread out around it. Posted hours run seven days a week, and the company responds to urgent electrical situations alongside scheduled work. Photographs of finished projects, from new construction wiring to panel work, appear on the company’s website and in its Facebook updates on recent electrical projects.

Choosing among Missoula electricians comes back to specifics. Ask about the license behind the work, the equipment available for diagnosis, and the categories of jobs the crew handles most weeks. Vague answers to concrete questions carry their own information.
