Sue Phillips Turned Fragrance Into Experiential Brand

In today’s competitive marketplace, entrepreneurs are constantly searching for ways to differentiate themselves. For fragrance expert, author, and entrepreneur Sue Phillips, differentiation came through one of the most powerful human senses: smell.

As founder of Scenterprises, Phillips has built a business around the idea that fragrance should be more than something purchased from a department store shelf. It should be personal, experiential, and emotionally meaningful.

Her journey began long before personalized experiences became a defining trend in luxury. With decades of experience in fragrance, beauty, marketing, and brand development, Phillips developed an understanding of what makes consumers connect with products beyond packaging or advertising.

Her executive career included serving as Vice President of Marketing for Fragrance at Tiffany & Co. and working across fragrance and beauty initiatives associated with recognized names including Burberry, Trish McEvoy, Avon, Diane von Furstenberg, Lancaster, and others.

Those experiences taught Phillips an important business lesson: great brands don’t simply sell products. They create emotional associations.

She eventually took that philosophy into entrepreneurship through Scenterprises.

Rather than competing directly with mass-market fragrance companies, Phillips created a differentiated business model centered on customized fragrance experiences. Clients participate in discovering fragrance families, understanding their preferences, and ultimately developing scents that represent their personalities, memories, lifestyles, or aspirations.

The concept has applications far beyond individual perfume.

Companies can use fragrance as part of corporate events, customer experiences, executive gifting, hospitality, weddings, celebrations, and brand activations. In each instance, scent becomes a vehicle for storytelling.

That approach reflects a larger transformation taking place in business. Consumers increasingly expect personalization. They don’t simply want to purchase something; they want to participate in its creation.

Phillips understood the value of experiential business before the term became ubiquitous.

Her model also illustrates the power of specialization. Rather than attempting to be everything to everyone, Scenterprises focuses on Phillips’ expertise and transforms that knowledge into a premium service.

It is a strategy other entrepreneurs can learn from.

Deep expertise can become intellectual property. Knowledge can become an experience. And an experience can become a scalable brand story.

Phillips has also extended her expertise through speaking, media appearances, consulting, and her book, The Power of Perfume, which explores the relationship between scent, memory, emotion, confidence, and personal identity.

Her career demonstrates another important entrepreneurial principle: reinvention doesn’t necessarily require abandoning what you know.

Sometimes it means looking at your expertise differently.

Phillips took decades of fragrance knowledge and reimagined how consumers could experience it. Instead of simply selling fragrance, she created opportunities for people to understand it, participate in it, and make it their own.

As artificial intelligence and automation reshape customer service, businesses are simultaneously discovering the value of high-touch experiences.

That creates an interesting opportunity for entrepreneurs like Phillips.

Technology can simplify transactions, but personalized human interaction can make those transactions memorable.

For Scenterprises, conversation remains central to the experience. Phillips listens to clients, learns what resonates with them, and guides them through a creative journey.

It is a business built around something technology still struggles to replicate completely: emotional connection.

In a marketplace filled with choices, Sue Phillips has demonstrated that differentiation doesn’t always require inventing an entirely new product.

Sometimes innovation begins by transforming an existing product into an unforgettable experience.
