Pittsburgh has never been a city that waits around for somebody else’s approval. Its identity was forged by people who made things, steel, bridges, neighborhoods, businesses, art, and that working-class independence still runs through its music scene. Two artists currently embodying very different versions of that tradition are Noble Hops and Cello.
One is a road-tested American rock and roll band built around guitars, storytelling, and the stubborn determination to keep playing. The other is a genre-fluid singer-songwriter, poet, and performer turning the complexities of his inner life into intensely personal music.
Put them together, and they reveal something interesting about Pittsburgh in 2026: there isn’t one Pittsburgh sound. There is, however, a Pittsburgh attitude.
For Noble Hops, perseverance is practically part of the instrumentation.
The Western Pennsylvania band’s latest single, “Music Man,” released April 11 on Shady Lady Records, tells the story of a fictional wandering musician inspired by real-life experiences and old musical lore. Written by frontman Utah Burgess, the character doesn’t achieve fame or fortune. He simply keeps traveling with his guitar because music has become inseparable from who he is.
It’s difficult not to hear some Noble Hops DNA in that story.
The band has built its reputation the old-fashioned way: performing relentlessly. Its 2026 schedule has stretched across Pennsylvania and neighboring states, continuing a live-performance ethic that values actual rooms and actual audiences in an era increasingly dominated by streaming statistics. Its official site also lists two 2026 Josie Music Award nominations, for Group of the Year in the Rock Genre Mix and Fan’s Choice in the Duo/Group category.
“Music Man” was recorded with Jazz Byers at Pittsburgh’s Rattle Clack Studio, but getting the song right required patience. Recording began in early 2024 before the original tracks were abandoned and the process restarted later that year.
That’s an appropriate creation story for a song about persistence.
Noble Hops makes music that remembers when rock and roll was as much an occupation as a genre. Guitars had to be carried. Amplifiers had to be loaded. Miles had to be driven. The gig mattered whether 2,000 people showed up or 20 did.
Cello approaches Pittsburgh from almost the opposite direction.
Where Noble Hops looks outward toward the road, Cello, Marcello Valletta, turns inward.
His nine-song album Singing to Serpents was released March 1, 2026, spanning approximately 29 minutes and including “Stay Here,” “Elevate,” “Sucks to Be Used,” “Full Moon,” “So Long,” “Cravings,” “Pray,” “Faith” and “Sleeping.”
Calling it pop, alternative, or hip-hop doesn’t quite capture it. Cello draws from all of those worlds while incorporating spoken-word instincts and the confessional intimacy of a singer-songwriter. His background as a poet and performer is evident in music that often resembles an internal monologue acquiring rhythm in real time.
If Noble Hops celebrates endurance on the physical road, Cello documents another kind of journey.
Singing to Serpents examines love, obsession, insecurity, desire, depression, spirituality, and self-discovery without forcing those subjects into reassuring conclusions. “Stay Here” turns romantic longing into something increasingly desperate. “Pray” and “Faith” wrestle with spirituality rather than presenting belief as a finished answer. “Sleeping” closes the album only after the emotional turbulence has nearly exhausted itself.
Cello’s neurodivergence adds another dimension to his story. He has autism and ADHD, experiences he has increasingly connected with advocacy as well as his creative work. He is working toward a goal of becoming a certified peer-support professional in the autism field, hoping eventually to use lived experience to help others navigate their own challenges.
That makes his artistic evolution about more than building an audience. Music has become one way of translating an internal experience for people who might otherwise never encounter it.
And here, strangely enough, Cello and Noble Hops meet.
Their music sounds little alike, but both are fundamentally concerned with being heard without becoming somebody else first.
Noble Hops doesn’t disguise itself as whatever version of rock happens to be fashionable this month. “Music Man” instead embraces the archetype of the musician who continues because playing has become a way of life. Recent coverage has emphasized precisely that quality: the song honors the largely unsung working musicians who keep loading into rooms regardless of whether celebrity ever arrives.
Cello similarly resists easy packaging. Singing to Serpents allows vulnerability to remain uncomfortable and contradiction to remain unresolved. Reviews have repeatedly noted its rawness, genre fluidity, and willingness to let emotional disorder become part of the album’s structure.
Maybe that’s the connection to Pittsburgh.
This city understands people who keep making things.
Noble Hops makes rock and roll from the road, the rehearsal room, and the accumulated mileage of musicians who refuse to quit.
Cello makes music from anxiety, desire, faith, neurodivergence, and the sometimes-chaotic machinery of thought.
Different generations. Different approaches. Different sounds.
But underneath both is the same stubborn proposition: the work matters enough to keep doing it.
In Pittsburgh, that sentiment has always sounded familiar.
