Janice Delima carried the Philippine national flag at the 48th Anniversary of Peace Day in Chicago on September 21, 2026. The observance took place at Daley Plaza in the downtown Loop. The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago joined the program, represented by Consul Melvin Almonguera and Consular Assistant Dennis Marnilego, alongside members of the Filipino American community from across the Midwest.

The United Nations marks the International Day of Peace every September 21. A General Assembly resolution fixed the date and declared it a day of global ceasefire and non‑violence. Chicago has held its own Peace Day gathering for close to fifty years.

A Moment at Daley Plaza

Daley Plaza sits at the center of downtown Chicago. Commuters cross it every morning. Visitors stop to photograph the Picasso sculpture. On Peace Day, the plaza fills with flags from dozens of countries.

Janice Delima grew up in Leyte, in the Visayas. She later built her career in the United States and now lives in the Chicago area. In her account of the celebration, she described the moment as one of peace, unity, culture, and Filipino pride.

Carrying a flag is a simple act. The audience gives it weight. People crossing the plaza that afternoon saw that a Filipino community lives in the Midwest, works there, and takes part in civic life.

How Janice Delima Built a Career in Fashion Production

She founded Alegre De Pilipinas in 2022. The company works in runway production and entertainment. It presents Filipino designers, models, and labels at international fashion events, including shows tied to New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week.

Her professional view links two things that usually sit apart. A fashion production is a business project. It runs on budgets, contracts, timelines, and partners in several countries. It is also a stage for regional craft, weaving traditions, and design work that global audiences rarely see. Janice Delima treats both sides as one job rather than two.

That approach shapes how she picks collaborators. She looks for designers whose work carries a clear origin story, then places that story in a commercial setting where buyers and press already gather. The craft does not need a separate explanation. The runway supplies the context.

Janice Delima also works across two calendars at once. Fashion weeks in New York and Paris set their dates far in advance. Designers based in the Philippines need visas, shipping windows, and sample production time to meet those dates. A large share of the company’s work happens in the gap between a fixed date and a finished collection.

Filipino families across the Midwest are spread over many states and many cities. They arrive from Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. They speak different languages at home and celebrate different provincial traditions. Shared public events give them one room to stand in together.

Janice Delima makes this point often. People from different islands carry different histories. A gathering like Peace Day does not erase those differences. It gives them a common setting and a common audience.

The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago supports that work through cultural programs, community partnerships, and consular outreach across its territory. Community organizations carry the rest of the load.

That outreach reaches well past the city. The Consulate runs missions to cities such as Indianapolis and Overland Park, bringing passport, dual citizenship, notarization, and civil registration services to Filipinos who live hours from the nearest office. Cultural programming often follows the same routes. One gathering in a smaller city tends to produce the organizing committee for the next one.

Practical Steps for Community Leaders

Janice Delima offers a few points for people organizing cultural work in their own cities.

Start with the calendar that already exists. Civic observances such as Peace Day arrive with venues, permits, and press attention already arranged. Joining one takes far less effort than building an event from nothing.

Introduce yourself to official channels early. Consulates publish schedules of cultural programs and community activities throughout the year. A group that makes contact before it needs anything has an easier conversation later.

Keep the cultural content specific. Broad statements about heritage fade quickly. A named weaving technique, a provincial dish, or a regional dance holds attention much longer.

Record the day. Photographs and short video clips from a single afternoon give a community group material to share for months. She posted footage from the Daley Plaza program the same week.

Beyond a Single Afternoon

The Peace Day appearance lasted a few hours. The work around it continues.

Janice Delima plans to keep pairing cultural programming with her production schedule. Alegre De Pilipinas continues preparing for fashion weeks abroad while she stays active in Filipino American community events across Illinois.

Community work in the Midwest runs on volunteers. Organizers hold day jobs. Budgets come from members and small sponsors. Consistency counts for more than scale here, because the same faces return at the next observance and the one after that.

Her message at the plaza was short. Filipinos come from different islands and different backgrounds, and they still stand together as one people. She framed peace as something that starts with individuals rather than institutions.

The flag she carried belongs to a country roughly 8,000 miles from Daley Plaza. The people watching her carry it live in the American Midwest. Janice Delima sees that distance as the reason the work matters rather than an obstacle to it.
