Channel Nine Served With Federal Court Proceedings in Jamie McIntyre $4 Million-Plus Claim
Nine Entertainment has been served with Federal Court proceedings brought by self-made millionaire, property developer and political commentator Jamie McIntyre over an A Current Affair report that McIntyre alleges seriously damaged his reputation.
The proceeding is seeking more than AUD $4 million in damages and other relief, according to McIntyre.
The Commonwealth Courts Portal confirms that proceeding WAD343/2026 — Jamie McIntyre v Nine Entertainment Co Pty Limited was filed in the Federal Court of Australia’s Western Australia Registry on 17 September 2026. The matter is currently recorded as open.
The lawsuit centres on allegations concerning Nine’s reporting about McIntyre and a Balinese builder, including the portrayal that McIntyre owed the builder approximately AUD $900,000.
McIntyre maintains that this portrayal was false and fundamentally reversed the true financial position between the parties.
According to McIntyre, the relevant court ruling did not find that he owed the builder $900,000. He says the evidence and findings instead supported the opposite conclusion: that money was owed to McIntyre’s interests.
Despite this, McIntyre alleges that Channel Nine and A Current Affair presented Australian viewers with a sensationalised and misleading story that portrayed him as having failed to pay an impoverished Balinese builder.
McIntyre claims the program was a calculated “hit piece” that ignored or misrepresented critical evidence, causing substantial damage to his personal and professional reputation.
Nine Now Required to Answer in Federal Court
The filing of the proceeding does not itself determine liability, and Nine will have the opportunity to respond to McIntyre’s allegations.
However, McIntyre says the case will now force the network to defend its reporting in court and explain the evidentiary basis for broadcasting the allegations.
“This was not responsible journalism—it was character assassination,” McIntyre said.
“Channel Nine portrayed me as owing a poor Balinese builder approximately $900,000, when the court outcome supported the opposite position. Nine has refused to correct the record, retract the story or apologise for the damage it caused.”
McIntyre alleges that Nine continued to promote the story even after being placed on notice of the facts and the relevant court outcome.
He says that refusal to correct the public record substantially aggravated the damage caused by the original broadcast.
Demand for Retraction and Apology
McIntyre is pursuing more than $4 million in damages, together with any further relief sought in the Federal Court proceeding.
He is also demanding that Channel Nine and A Current Affair retract the allegedly false claims, correct the public record and issue an apology.
McIntyre says the case raises broader questions about the power of major media organisations to publicly condemn individuals before properly testing the evidence.
“Large media corporations cannot be permitted to destroy someone’s reputation for ratings and then refuse to correct the story when the facts contradict their preferred narrative,” he said.
“Channel Nine has had the opportunity to retract and apologise. Instead, it has continued to allow Australian viewers to be misled. The matter will now be tested in the Federal Court.”
The publicly available court record presently confirms the identity of the parties, the filing date and that the proceeding remains open. The allegations and damages claim have not yet been finally determined by the Court.
Nine Entertainment should be invited to respond to the allegations.
