Chaitra Vedullapalli on Leadership: Gatekeeper vs Gateway

By: Bruno Antelo

There is a moment in ICONIC Leadership where Chaitra Vedullapalli makes a distinction that cuts through most of what has been written about power and influence in leadership. Every leader eventually becomes one of two things, she says. A gatekeeper or a gateway. She doesn’t believe there is a third option.

A gatekeeper treats access as something to protect. Relationships, opportunities, influence, and information become resources accumulated over the course of a career. Success is measured, in part, by how much access a person has earned.

A gateway sees influence differently. Access becomes more valuable when it creates opportunities for others. Relationships become bridges. Leadership becomes a way to connect people with rooms, resources, capital, knowledge, and opportunities they may not have been able to reach on their own.

That distinction sits at the center of Open Access, one of the six dimensions of the ICONIC ARC developed by Vedullapalli and Dee Dee Walsh.

Open Access as a Leadership Responsibility

The pillar they call Open Access is one of the most distinctive ideas in the book, and it is deliberate in how directly it challenges the default logic of many leadership systems. Many leadership frameworks quietly teach accumulation. Get more authority. Build more relationships. Collect more access. It is rarely said out loud, but the scoreboard tends to look the same: how much do you personally hold by the end.

Vedullapalli is asking something different. Who gets the introduction. Who receives the capital. Who gets trusted with the assignment that actually matters. Whose voice helps shape an algorithm before that algorithm shapes a million lives without ever asking permission.

Talent is everywhere, she says. It always has been. Opportunity is what has been rationed, locked behind gates nobody built on purpose, but everybody still benefits from anyway. That is why Open Access is not a nice value in this framework. It is a responsibility. Accumulation without redistribution is just a slower, quieter form of the gatekeeping the book is asking leaders to stop doing.

The Definition of ICONIC That Changes Everything

The word ICONIC, as Vedullapalli uses it, has nothing to do with fame, wealth, or power, and she means that literally. Celebrity culture has borrowed the word for so long that people forget it used to mean something worth remembering.

She asks readers to think about the one teacher, coach, or manager who changed the entire direction of their life. Chances are that person cannot be found on the internet. They never gave a keynote. Nobody is making a documentary about them. And yet, if you trace your own story backward far enough, you land on a moment they created for you, on purpose, when they didn’t have to.

That is the whole difference. Fame is being remembered for what you achieved. ICONIC Leadership is being remembered through what other people became because you showed up for them.

The real test has nothing to do with title or net worth. Will your name make it into a history book? Maybe, maybe not, and honestly it doesn’t matter. The only question is whether your leadership bent the direction of even one life that would have gone somewhere worse without you in it.

The 10,000 Leaders and What Changes When They Connect

Walsh and Vedullapalli have set a goal of developing 10,000 ICONIC Leaders in cities around the world, and the reasoning behind that number matters. Ten thousand books sitting on shelves cannot change the future. Ten thousand leaders acting together have a better chance.

One leader redesigns how AI affects employees inside a company. Another opens a pathway for overlooked founders. Another brings changes in public policy. Another protects a community from an algorithm no one questioned. Then they connect. Their knowledge travels. Their relationships become infrastructure. Their individual influence becomes collective power.

They are not building an audience around a book. They are building a human leadership network intended to influence how the intelligent age is designed.
