AUSTRALIA’S MEDIA DUOPOLY ACCUSED OF PROTECTING THE WRONG MAN
McIntyre alleges News Corp and Channel Nine helped promote Adrian Campbell’s blame-and-deflect campaign while ignoring evidence concerning millions of dollars in Marina Bay City investor funds
Australia’s two dominant commercial media organisations—Murdoch-controlled News Corp and Channel Nine—stand accused of helping promote a calculated campaign designed to protect controversial businessman Adrian Campbell while publicly vilifying property developer Jamie McIntyre.
McIntyre alleges that News Corp publications and Channel Nine’s A Current Affair published grossly misleading character-assassination pieces based substantially on material supplied by Campbell’s public-relations operation. He says the reports portrayed McIntyre as responsible for the Marina Bay City controversy while failing to scrutinise the people and companies that allegedly received or controlled millions of dollars paid by purchasers.
At the centre of the dispute is an estimated A$6 million to A$7 million that McIntyre alleges was diverted or retained by Campbell, Kinnara Group and associated parties from the billion-dollar Marina Bay City development in Lombok.
Campbell and the relevant companies should be given a full opportunity to respond to these allegations. However, McIntyre says the financial records, contracts, payment instructions and court material now require serious investigation—not continued media silence.
The criminal history Campbell allegedly tried to suppress
According to McIntyre, Campbell recently sought Federal Court orders that would have restricted McIntyre from discussing Campbell’s history and conduct. Those restraints were ultimately discharged, and Campbell was ordered to pay 80 per cent of the costs associated with the interim proceedings.
McIntyre argues that this outcome raises an obvious question: why have News Corp and A Current Affair not revisited their previous reporting in light of the court result and the evidence subsequently made public?
Campbell’s history is not a minor footnote. It is central to determining whose account of the Marina Bay City dispute deserves scrutiny.
McIntyre points to Campbell’s involvement in a series of earlier controversies, including Eco Boss Australia and GIM Trading. An ABC investigation previously reported that approximately A$23 million was missing from GIM Trading client accounts, while an ASIC investigation reportedly traced approximately A$17 million offshore.
The existence of previous allegations does not, by itself, prove the current Marina Bay City claims. But it unquestionably makes Campbell’s background and the destination of purchaser funds matters of legitimate public interest.
Yet the Australian media organisations that were willing to broadcast accusations against McIntyre have shown remarkably little enthusiasm for investigating Campbell’s history, the companies surrounding him or the bank accounts into which investor money was allegedly directed.
The Eco Boss pattern
McIntyre says the present media campaign bears striking similarities to Campbell’s conduct in the Eco Boss Australia affair.
Campbell’s Australian business was accused of copying the identity and business model of an established British company, marketing products without proper authority and failing to deliver products for which customers had paid.
When complaints emerged, Campbell allegedly responded with an aggressive publicity campaign that redirected blame towards the legitimate UK company. The resulting negative publicity reportedly caused enormous commercial damage, with the British company stating that its sales fell dramatically and that it was forced to commence legal action to have damaging material removed.
McIntyre alleges that the same playbook is now being used against him:
1. Obtain or control investor funds.
2. Fail to properly account for or remit those funds.
3. Redirect responsibility to the developer.
4. launch an aggressive public-relations campaign.
5. Feed damaging allegations to compliant media organisations.
6. Attack the person demanding that the money be returned.
If established, this is not journalism holding power to account. It is the weaponisation of media outlets to support a commercial blame-shifting strategy.
Who received the Marina Bay City money?
The central question is simple: where did the purchasers’ money go?
McIntyre alleges that contracts were issued without proper authority and that, in a number of cases, payment instructions were altered so purchasers sent money to Kinnara-controlled Hong Kong accounts or other associated accounts.
He further alleges that the contracts purported to place the development obligations and liabilities upon the Indonesian developer, PT Bali Real Estate Investments, while directing some or all of the purchase money elsewhere.
If a third party caused contracts to be issued in the developer’s name, directed the money into accounts it controlled and then blamed the developer for not completing construction without receiving the funds, that would demand an immediate and comprehensive investigation.
It would also fundamentally undermine the narrative promoted by sections of the Australian media.
McIntyre maintains that he was not responsible for defrauding Marina Bay City purchasers. On the contrary, he says that he and the development group were themselves victims of an alleged A$6 million to A$7 million diversion of project funds.
He has publicly stated that the affected villas can be built if the money allegedly retained by Campbell and his associates is returned.
Journalism or a purchased narrative?
McIntyre alleges that the stories published by News Corp and broadcast by A Current Affair closely followed material circulated by Campbell’s public-relations representatives.
He has further raised questions about whether any payments, benefits, favours or commercial arrangements influenced the promotion of that narrative. No finding has been made establishing such conduct, and the media organisations and individuals concerned should be invited to respond.
Nevertheless, the appearance of bias is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Why did these outlets publish sensational allegations against McIntyre while apparently failing to conduct equivalent investigations into:
* Campbell’s disclosed criminal and commercial history;
* the allegedly unauthorised Marina Bay City contracts;
* the substitution of developer bank details with offshore accounts;
* the approximately A$23 million reportedly missing from GIM Trading;
* the approximately A$17 million reportedly traced offshore;
* the Eco Boss controversy;
* the Federal Court outcome; and
* the ultimate destination of millions of dollars paid by Marina Bay City purchasers?
These are not obscure or irrelevant details. They go directly to the credibility of the sources upon whom the original reports appear to have relied.
Refusal to correct the record
McIntyre says concerns notices have been issued to News Corp publications and Channel Nine in relation to allegedly false and defamatory reporting.
Despite the Federal Court result and the emergence of further financial and contractual evidence, he says neither organisation has adequately corrected, retracted or balanced its reporting.
“News Corp and Channel Nine were prepared to publish Campbell’s allegations, but they appear unwilling to tell Australians about his history or investigate where the Marina Bay City money actually went,” McIntyre said.
“They portrayed me as the perpetrator when the evidence shows that our development was deprived of between six and seven million Australian dollars. We were the party defrauded.”
McIntyre believes the coverage may also have been motivated by hostility towards his political positions.
“If I had not publicly opposed vaccine mandates and criticised the Israeli Government’s policies, would Murdoch’s newspapers have published the same character-assassination material?” he asked.
“Was this ever about presenting the evidence fairly, or was it about destroying someone whose political views they dislike?”
A dangerous failure of Australian journalism
News Corp and Channel Nine exercise extraordinary influence over Australian public opinion. With that influence comes an obligation to investigate allegations impartially, test the credibility of sources and correct material when important contrary evidence emerges.
They cannot legitimately claim to be fearless investigators while refusing to investigate the backgrounds, financial interests and alleged conduct of the people supplying their stories.
Nor can they publish accusations from one side of a complex commercial dispute and then ignore documents suggesting that investor funds may have been directed to third-party or offshore accounts.
McIntyre alleges that, by continuing to promote Campbell’s narrative while refusing to properly examine the evidence against him, News Corp and Channel Nine have effectively assisted a broader campaign to divert attention from the missing Marina Bay City funds.
Whether that assistance was intentional, reckless or simply the product of deeply inadequate journalism is a question that may now be tested in court.
Court proceedings looming
McIntyre says proceedings have been commenced against News Corp-related parties and that Federal Court proceedings against Channel Nine are expected to follow.
Those cases may finally compel the media organisations to disclose how the stories originated, what information their journalists received, which warnings were ignored, what attempts were made to verify Campbell’s credibility and why significant contrary evidence was omitted.
“For too long, powerful media organisations have believed they can publish whatever narrative suits them and destroy reputations without consequence,” McIntyre said.
“This is bigger than me. When major media companies allow themselves to become instruments in a blame-and-deflect campaign, they do not merely report an alleged fraud—they risk helping to conceal it.”
The Australian public deserves more than sensational headlines and one-sided television ambushes. Marina Bay City purchasers deserve a transparent accounting of where their money went. They deserve evidence, bank records and answers.
Most importantly, they deserve media organisations prepared to investigate the people who received the money—not merely attack the developer who says it never arrived.
