Irvine, California — November 2025. Eighteen-year-old pianist Ryan Leong, from Arcadia, California, captivated a full audience at the Irvine Barclay Theatre with a commanding 90-minute full-length recital that featured four centuries of piano literature — from Bach’s Prelude and Fugue, Chopin’s Étude, and Beethoven’s Sonata, to Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata and the monumental Liszt Sonata in B Minor.

The evening demonstrated not only his extraordinary technical command but also a maturity of interpretation often seen in musicians of his age. Each piece illuminated a different aspect of Ryan’s artistry — the architectural clarity of Bach, the delicate lyricism of Chopin, the noble elegance of Beethoven, the sharp wit and rhythmic bite of Prokofiev, and the transcendental vision of Liszt. His ability to navigate such stylistic diversity within a single program suggested a profound musical understanding cultivated through years of disciplined study.

Performing such a demanding and emotionally charged program at just 18 is certainly a remarkable artistic feat. From the first notes of Bach to the thunderous conclusion of Liszt, Ryan held the audience in rapt attention. The performance gradually built in intensity, culminating in a full standing ovation that lasted several minutes — a clear acknowledgment of his talent and dedication.

Throughout the program, Ryan showcased his ability to communicate the essence of each piece with clarity, often moving seamlessly between technical brilliance and emotional depth. His rendition of Beethoven’s Sonata, for example, balanced power with nuance, making it a memorable highlight of the evening.

Ryan’s performance not only demonstrated his technical prowess but also revealed his deep emotional engagement with each piece. The passion he poured into every note, the careful phrasing, and the evocative dynamics added layers of meaning to each composition. As the audience listened, they could feel the emotional journey unfolding, with each transition between pieces telling a different part of Ryan’s artistic story.

Ryan began studying piano at the age of four and has since earned top prizes at the Golden Classical Music Awards and the Charleston International Piano Competition, as well as an acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut earlier this year. His musical journey reflects a blend of personal ambition and a genuine love for sharing music. Outside of the concert stage, Ryan performs regularly at local senior centers, offering free concerts that bring joy to elderly audiences and foster intergenerational connection through art.

Beyond his performances, Ryan’s dedication to creating meaningful experiences for his audience was clear throughout the evening. His concert was not only a display of technical mastery but also an invitation to connect with the music on a deeper level.

In addition to his public performances, Ryan’s commitment to music education is evident through his outreach efforts. He works with young students, sharing his expertise and passion for the piano, hoping to inspire the next generation of musicians.

His mentor, Steinway Young Artist Maxine Gong, has described him as “a young musician whose artistry reflects both intellect and empathy — he reveals the essence of music through balance, structure, and heart.”

Many young audience members left the hall deeply inspired, expressing that Ryan’s story encouraged them to pursue their own passions. “It’s amazing to see someone our age achieve something so powerful,” one high school student shared after the concert.

For the Southern California classical community, Ryan’s recital was not only a celebration of a rising star but also a reminder of how discipline and imagination can converge in youth to create moments of lasting beauty, inspiring both seasoned musicians and newcomers alike. His performance stood as a testament to the power of dedication and the potential within young artists to shape the future of classical music, leaving a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.
