Mickell Lowery: A Vision for Shelby County Rooted in Family, Education, and Progress

By: Lennard James

Mickell M. Lowery has emerged as one of the dynamic public figures in Shelby County, Tennessee, a leader whose vision blends family values, community progress, and bold reform. As a longtime Shelby County Commissioner, Lowery has developed a strong commitment to the people and neighborhoods he serves. His values are rooted in faith, family, and service. Married to his wife, Chonisa, he is the proud father of three daughters, Channise, Myla, and Milan. His sense of purpose stems from his desire to build a Shelby County that works not just for his own family, but for every family that calls it home.

Public service runs in Lowery’s blood. His father, Myron Lowery, was a respected Memphis City Councilman and former City Court Clerk who left a lasting legacy of integrity and civic engagement. Growing up in that environment, Mickell learned early that leadership means listening, showing up, and working for those whose voices often go unheard. Those values have shaped his approach to governing, an approach rooted in compassion, accountability, and measurable action.

During his tenure as Shelby County Commissioner, Lowery has earned a reputation as a bridge-builder. Representing District 8, which includes Downtown, Frayser, South Memphis, North Memphis, and Central Gardens, he has championed policies that expand opportunity, strengthen education, and modernize infrastructure. His leadership style is hands-on and people-centered. He is known for being present in neighborhoods, walking the blocks, attending local meetings, and maintaining an open-door policy for residents seeking real answers and real results.

A significant part of Lowery’s platform has been his advocacy for accessible and equitable healthcare. He has expressed support for efforts to improve Shelby County’s medical infrastructure, including investments in the new Regional One hospital campus, aiming to better serve future generations. For Lowery, healthcare is more than a policy issue; it is a matter of human dignity. He believes that no family should have to drive across the county for quality care and that the new hospital could provide critical services and potential economic benefits, including job creation.

Education, too, is at the heart of Lowery’s vision. He has been outspoken about the underfunding of the public school system and how this inequity limits the potential of children across Shelby County. To him, education is the foundation of any strong community. He believes in increasing funding for teachers, improving school facilities, and expanding after-school and mentorship programs. His years volunteering with youth programs and coaching local football teams reflect his belief that investment in children is an investment in the county’s future. Lowery has often said that every child, no matter what their ZIP code, deserves access to a quality education that prepares them for success.

Lowery’s background in the private sector also shapes his pragmatic approach to government. With over two decades of experience at FedEx Corporation in global marketing, sales, and IT strategy, he understands the importance of efficiency, innovation, and accountability. His corporate experience has given him insight into how public-private partnerships can be leveraged to create jobs, strengthen small businesses, and attract investment to underserved communities.

Lowery is focused on promoting unity and collaboration across Shelby County. He advocates for cooperation among business leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, and local officials to foster progress that may benefit all areas of the county. His priorities include improving education, expanding access to healthcare, supporting economic growth, and enhancing public safety, with an emphasis on prevention. Lowery envisions a Shelby County where government serves all communities, fostering transparency and trust.

Lowery’s advocacy has garnered attention for its blend of experience and empathy, resonating with many who are focused on practical solutions for Shelby County’s challenges. He doesn’t simply talk about Shelby County’s challenges; he lives them alongside his constituents. Whether addressing youth violence, infrastructure decay, or the lack of funding in schools, Lowery approaches each issue through the lens of solutions, not politics. He is also deeply attuned to the changing demographics and economic realities of the region and believes in preparing Shelby County for the industries and workforce of the future.

What makes Lowery’s story compelling is the way he connects big-picture policy with everyday life. His love for his wife and daughters fuels his determination to make Shelby County a safer, stronger, and more equitable place. When he speaks about the need for better education, he thinks of the classrooms his daughters have sat in. When he fights for a new hospital, he thinks of the families waiting hours in emergency rooms. And when he talks about leadership, he does so from the perspective of a man who has spent his life serving not from behind a desk, but side by side with the people.

Mickell Lowery’s run for Mayor is about building a future that respects Shelby County’s legacy while embracing innovation, inclusion, and accountability. His focus on education and healthcare addresses two of the community’s pressing needs, while his record as commissioner demonstrates a track record of results. Through his leadership, he has demonstrated that progress doesn’t happen overnight, but rather when leaders listen, collaborate, and act decisively.

As Shelby County moves forward, Mickell Lowery stands ready to lead with purpose and compassion. His dedication to public service, rooted in his family values and professional integrity, continues to inspire those who believe that government can be both practical and empathetic. For Lowery, the goal is simple yet profound: to give every family like his own the opportunity to live, learn, and thrive in a Shelby County that works for everyone.
