Exclusive: Ma Erhua Drives LED Revolution with 20 Patents, 195lm/W Efficacy Sets Industry Benchmark

“When a light bulb achieves 195 lumens per watt, it transforms not just illumination itself, but the global energy consumption landscape.” In the R&D laboratory of Mester LED Ltd., founder and general manager Ma Erhua runs his finger along an operational LED high bay light. On the device’s screen, the efficacy test data stabilizes at 195lm/W—35% higher than the current industry average, setting a new benchmark for industrial lighting efficiency.

As a technology leader with over two decades of experience in the LED lighting sector, Ma holds 20 core invention patents spanning intelligent dimming, modular heat dissipation, and spectral regulation. These technologies, born in a Chinese laboratory, are redefining standards for efficiency and energy conservation across applications in more than 30 countries and regions worldwide.

The LED lighting industry has long grappled with three major challenges: stagnant efficacy improvements, drastically shortened lifespans in high-temperature environments, and poor adaptability across scenarios. When Mester Optoelectronics was founded in 2009, Ma identified patent-driven R&D as the key to breaking through these barriers. “Back then, most domestic LED products delivered less than 100lm/W, and their service life fell below 30,000 hours in high-temperature industrial workshops—far short of the continuous operation requirements for industrial production,” he recalled in the interview.

To address the “bottleneck” of heat dissipation, Ma led his team through 18 months of bionic research and repeated experiments, developing the “Modular Heat Dissipation Structure and Its LED Lighting Device” (Patent No.: ZL 202010319485.6). By optimizing channel design to mimic leaf vein heat transfer, the technology reduces the lamp’s operating temperature by 40% and extends its service life from the industry’s typical 50,000 hours to 98,000 hours. “We designed the heat dissipation modules to be detachable and combinable, solving the high-efficiency cooling problem for high-power lamps while lowering adaptation costs across scenarios. For example, lamps for industrial plants and commercial exhibition halls can share core heat dissipation modules, cutting production costs by around 15% through mass manufacturing,” Ma explained.

The breakthrough in efficacy also stems from targeted R&D. His leading patent, “An Industrial Machine Tool Lighting Fixture with Adjustable Functions and Its Regulation Method” (Patent No.: ZL 202210738049.1), achieves an ultra-high efficacy of 195 lm/W through optical lens restructuring and driver circuit upgrades—28% more energy-efficient than traditional LED lamps. This achievement has been featured in the international lighting technology journal Journal of Progress in Engineering and Physical Science, which praised it as “a scalable technical solution for global energy-saving lighting.”

To date, all 20 invention patents led by Ma have been industrialized. Among them, the “Spectrally Tunable LED Plant Lighting Technology” shortens crop growth cycles by 15% and boosts leafy vegetable yields by approximately 10% in greenhouses across Guangdong and Yunnan provinces. The “Intelligent Industrial Lighting Control System” improves factory operational efficiency by 30%. All related technologies have obtained international certifications such as UL, DLC, and CE, serving as “passports” to mainstream global markets.

“The value of a patent lies not in the certificate itself, but in how many real-world problems it solves,” Ma emphasized, adhering to a closed-loop logic of “R&D, commercialization, and iteration.” Under his leadership, these core patents have delivered tangible results in key projects worldwide:

1)  At Dell’s industrial park in Texas, USA, the intelligent lighting system reduced lighting energy consumption by 27%, saving over 1 million RMB in annual electricity costs.

2)  At Fashion Island Shopping Center in California, spectral regulation technology enhanced product display effects, extending customer dwell time and driving a 23.4% increase in sales.

3)  In the smart city project of Renhe District, Panzhihua, China, fault diagnosis and automatic dimming technologies cut municipal lighting maintenance costs by 40% and reduced repair response time from 24 hours to 8 hours.

Behind these achievements is Ma’s rigorous control over technology commercialization. He established an “IP Incubation Center” within the company, decomposing 20 core patents into standardized technical modules to adapt to full-scene product development, including industrial, commercial, horticultural, and road lighting. “R&D teams must follow market demands rather than working in isolation in labs. For instance, we optimized our driver circuit patents to match North America’s voltage standards, allowing products to directly adapt to local power grids without additional modifications—raising certification pass rates from 60% to 95%,” he noted. The company invests 8% of its annual revenue in R&D, with cumulative investment exceeding 30 million RMB over the past three years, ensuring patent technologies keep pace with market needs.

Leveraging its technological edge, Mester Optoelectronics has grown into a key player in the global LED lighting industry, with annual revenue growing by 48% consistently. Overseas sales account for 40% of its total revenue, supported by a global layout of “Chinese R&D + multi-country manufacturing + worldwide sales”—including a warehouse in Texas, USA, and a production base in Cambodia. The company now employs over 700 people, with R&D engineers making up more than 15% of the workforce.

Beyond in-house R&D, Ma is dedicated to advancing industry technical standards. Based on his core patents, he led the development of 5 enterprise standards, including Technical Specifications for High-Efficiency and Energy-Saving LED Industrial Lighting Fixtures and Technical Requirements for UL/DLC Certification Adaptation of LED Lighting Products. Three of these standards have been adopted and promoted by national industry associations such as the China Illuminating Engineering Society and the China Electronics Standardization Institute, serving as important references for industry technology selection.

Looking ahead to the future of the LED lighting industry, Ma identified three core directions: “Scenario-based applications of Mini/Micro LED, deep integration of intelligent control systems with the Internet of Things (IoT), and global popularization of low-carbon lighting technologies.” Currently, his team’s “next-generation intelligent lighting IoT system” is in small-scale pilot testing. The system enables real-time connection between lighting equipment and industrial control systems, reducing overall workshop energy consumption by a further 8% in a pilot at a Shenzhen electronics factory. Full market launch is expected next year.

From a fiber optic communication engineer to an industry trailblazer with 20 invention patents, Ma’s career mirrors China’s LED industry transformation from a follower to a leader. His patent achievements have not only created significant commercial value for his company but also driven the global LED lighting industry toward greater efficiency, energy conservation, and intelligence—providing solid technical support for global efforts to reduce energy consumption and combat climate change.

“Every patent is a beam of light,” Ma said, gazing at the row of LED lamps in the laboratory with unwavering resolve. “Our mission is to let this light shine in more corners, contributing Chinese technical solutions to address global energy challenges.”
