Small components can create significant production risks when they are unavailable, poorly specified, difficult to install, or inconsistent in quality. Original equipment manufacturers can reduce those risks by treating fastening components as engineered parts of the production system rather than low-cost commodities.

When things are made to appease the needs of the largest possible group, they inevitably become generalized to some degree. If you make a specialized tool for a single, specific purpose, only a small niche of people who need that purpose fulfilled will buy it, and you may struggle to turn a profit. Conversely, if you make the tool less specific to that purpose, you can create a more generalized tool that more people will buy and is likely to turn a substantial profit much more easily. However, in this process, the tool’s integrity and original purpose are often sacrificed in the name of mass marketability.

This can be a fine line for manufacturers, who are ultimately companies that need their investments in new products to be financially viable to keep making them. But it can be even more frustrating for consumers who need a specialized part. Fortunately, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) can serve these purposes and equip consumers and businesses alike with the unique tools they need most.

Through these methods, custom OEM fastener manufacturing can be of vital aid. This kind of collaboration among engineering, procurement, quality, and manufacturing teams has the potential to improve component performance, simplify assembly, reduce part proliferation, and strengthen supply continuity.

Why Small Components Carry Large Operational Risks

Why fasteners, specifically? Well, small components, such as fasteners, may represent only a small portion of a finished product’s cost. However, they can still have large-scale and long-term effects on everything from assembly speed to product reliability, maintenance, quality control, and production continuity. A missing or unsuitable component can delay a much larger assembly in detrimental ways, and more traditional providers may not have the exactly specified piece that such a production needs on the fly.

The Difference Between Standard and Engineered Components

Standard components can and often do work well when widely accepted dimensions, materials, finishes, and performance specifications satisfy the application. If you need a less commonly used product, or one that doesn’t align with preset dimensions, an engineered component can address these issues.

Engineered parts become relevant when an application presents requirements such as:

  • Unusual load or torque conditions
  • Restricted installation space
  • Exposure to heat, chemicals, moisture, or vibration
  • Automated assembly requirements
  • Product-weight reduction goals
  • Specialized coatings or corrosion resistance
  • A need to consolidate several components into one design
  • Compatibility with specific tools or production equipment

Component Strategy’s Connection With Supply-Chain Resilience

Supply chain visibility and risk assessment help manufacturers identify vulnerable components before a shortage halts production. Recent business coverage of supply chain consolidation has pushed manufacturers to map supply networks, assess vulnerabilities, develop alternative sources, and move from reactive problem-solving toward proactive risk management.

Value of Early Engineering Collaboration

Bringing fastening and component engineers into a product program early can prevent problems that become expensive to correct once production begins. Decisions made in the first weeks of a design set the tolerances, materials, and assembly sequence that everything downstream depends on. Changing a fastener after tooling has been cut is a different exercise entirely.

Early collaboration can help teams examine joint design and load requirements, material compatibility, and manufacturing feasibility. All these elements can prove essential, and understanding them with such insight at such an early stage can be a critical aid to all parties involved.

For instance, consider an equipment manufacturer that uses several fasteners and washers and requires multiple installation steps for a single assembly. Should an engineering review determine that a redesigned component could perform the required functions with fewer parts, this could simplify inventory management and reduce handling during assembly, improving the process on all fronts.

OEMs can provide the precise tools consumers and businesses need most when they are in a production-related jam. When traditional products are made exclusively for mass appeal, the specificities can get lost in translation. Working with an OEM gives buyers a path to that specificity without settling for a generalized part.
