“Universities still focus on theoretical design in classrooms, but enterprises already demand full-cycle implementation capabilities driven by data; textbooks center on domestic market norms, while cross-border e-commerce products must comply with over 10 global regulatory standards”, addressing the core disconnect behind China’s 2 million+ talent shortage in the product design industry, Liu Shaolin, an Industry Professor at the “Ten Thousand Enterprises and Thousand Schools” Industry-Education Integration Promotion Association, has developed an industry-education integration system anchored in “technology empowerment, standard embedding, and practical foundation-building.” To date, she has trained over 300 interdisciplinary professionals, boosting the job adaptability rate of graduates from partner universities from 53% to 86% and increasing employment rates by 33 percentage points. Her innovative model has been designated as a benchmark case by educational associations in 21 provinces and municipalities, and incorporated into the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s 2024 special policy framework for industrial talent cultivation.
With over a decade of deep expertise in product design and cross-border e-commerce, Liu is a hands-on expert holding 8 core intellectual property rights. Her independently developed “Design Inspiration Source Management System V1.0” increases designers’ creativity retrieval efficiency by 60% and shortens project completion cycles by 25%; the “Intelligent Inventory Warehousing System V1.0” reduces enterprise inventory error rates from 15% to 2%, generating annual cost savings exceeding 1.5 million RMB. These technological achievements, already deployed in 8 leading enterprises and creating over 120 million RMB in economic value, serve as the “core teaching tools” for her talent development initiatives. Since being appointed as an Industry Professor in 2024, she has completely broken the “disconnect between classrooms and industry,” integrating real enterprise operational scenarios, core technical tools, and international market compliance standards into every aspect of teaching.
AI-assisted design originality ≥40%, 100% accuracy in U.S. FTC and EU REACH compliance screening, ≥25% emission reduction compliance rate for sustainable design solutions, and even practical requirements such as “cross-border product design response cycle ≤72 hours.” The guidelines fill a long-standing void in industry talent training standards and have been incorporated into supporting documents for the Ministry of Education’s 2025 special policy on industry-education integration, becoming a national teaching reference benchmark for product design programs.
In practical training, Liu led the establishment of a digital training center, investing 2.79 million RMB in advanced equipment including high-precision 3D printers and cross-border compliance testing tools. The center simulates 12 real-world work scenarios, such as intelligent product R&D, cross-border design adaptation, and patent commercialization. Students use the same intelligent design systems employed by enterprises and participate in practical projects based on over 50 real cross-border orders, replicating the full enterprise workflow from product structure optimization to compliance design adjustments. As a result, 85% of graduates can independently take on core tasks within one month of employment, and the center has been selected for the national-level Industry-Education Integration Demonstration Base incubation program.
For curriculum development, Liu authored the monograph Data-Driven Product Design Innovation: From Concept to Market, which includes 32 practical cases from European and American markets and has been adopted as a core textbook by 3 U.S. universities and 20 domestic institutions. Her online courses, focusing on “sustainable design practice” and “cross-border e-commerce visual optimization,” have attracted over 3,000 registered learners with satisfaction rates consistently ranging from 95% to 98%. Through the “dual-mentor system + real-project-driven learning” model, student teams guided by Liu have won gold medals at the National Industrial Design Competition. More than 50 graduates have been directly hired by partner enterprises, with 18 promoted to technical backbones within six months, 2.5 times the industry average promotion rate.
“Liu Shaolin’s core breakthrough lies in making commercial core technology systems and practical experience freely accessible to universities, saving each partner institution over 1 million RMB annually in licensing fees alone,” noted Dr. Maxwell Chen, Chief Expert and Doctoral Supervisor at the South China Institute of Intelligent Product Innovation. “More importantly, the students she trains master both technical operations and international rules, exactly the interdisciplinary pragmatic talents the industry desperately needs.” To date, industry forums organized by Liu have facilitated 15 university-enterprise cooperation agreements totaling over 80 million RMB, and her cross-border design case library has collected more than 60 practical projects directly usable for teaching. Moving forward, she plans to integrate cutting-edge advancements such as AI trend forecasting and low-carbon design into the curriculum, continuing to supply the industry with “plug-and-play” high-quality talents.
