Michael Dyrbo Birch on Customer Trust and Growth

A signed contract confirms a decision to invest. The work that follows determines whether that decision earns the customer’s continued confidence. For Michael Dyrbo Birch, Director EMEA at BetterCloud, this is where commercial promises face their most consequential test: in the everyday experience of the business that paid for them.

For Michael, the responsibility attached to a sale carries into the work of delivering it. What customers are told before signing should remain relevant to the teams implementing and supporting the solution. He believes that continuity helps establish the trust on which future business depends.

A Career Across Technology and Customer Success

Before his current role at BetterCloud, Michael worked in customer experience leadership at Tricent and cloud-related leadership at TDC Erhverv. His career across these fields has given the Copenhagen-based leader a broad perspective on the responsibilities surrounding a technology purchase. Technical delivery and customer experience are closely connected in his account of business growth. A provider’s capabilities matter through their application, and the customer’s experience helps establish whether those capabilities justify continued investment.

That background supports his emphasis on coordination. Customers carry their expectations from one department to another, even when the provider’s internal responsibilities change. Michael believes sales, customer success, partnerships, and delivery teams need a shared understanding of those expectations. His focus on customer experience earned editorial recognition in October 2024, when The CIO World featured him in “Top 10 CXO Visionaries Transforming Customer Experience.”

Supporting Retention Through Consistent Delivery

A renewal asks the customer to make another decision about value. Michael believes that decisions should be informed by a clear account of what has worked, what remains unfinished, and what the provider can usefully contribute next. He places customer success at the centre of that assessment, connecting delivery with the confidence needed for continued business and referrals. “The contract sets an expectation. Our responsibility is to stay involved as the customer works towards the outcome behind that purchase,” Michael says.

His leadership philosophy, “Humble Yet Hungry,” brings a similar discipline to ambition. He values the drive to develop opportunities alongside the willingness to listen, question assumptions, and accept responsibility. “Being humble means accepting that someone else may see what you have missed. Being hungry means being willing to act on what you learn,” Michael explains. Applied commercially, that balance makes room for honest feedback before an expectation becomes a commitment.

Giving Governance a Business Purpose

Michael approaches BetterCloud’s capabilities through the problems customers bring to the conversation. Some need to reduce recurring administrative work; others require closer oversight of access and shared information. SaaS management, automation, and file governance become relevant through those circumstances, allowing him to explain what each capability could contribute to the customer’s operations.

His perspective also gives governance a place in business leadership discussions. Decisions about software access and information sharing affect risk, efficiency, and confidence in an organisation’s systems. For Michael, introducing AI agents brings new responsibilities into that discussion. He believes cybersecurity and AI governance must develop together so that permissions, acceptable use, and oversight remain clear as automated systems take on more work.

Building Regional Growth Through Local Expertise

Growing BetterCloud’s business across EMEA requires Michael to connect regional strategy with customer relationships and market development. He sees partnerships as a foundation for that work, bringing local market knowledge into commercial planning. Clear coordination among partners helps translate that insight into relevant proposals and consistent follow-through on customer commitments.

His regional strategy includes Google ecosystem relationships that connect businesses with support for managing Workspace permissions and shared service information. In this setting, a partner relationship needs a clear customer purpose. Michael’s approach connects regional commercial development with the ability to identify needs, explain the relevant capabilities, and organise support. A scalable growth model therefore requires repeatable ways of working alongside sensitivity to the market and customer involved.

Assessing the Next Commercial Opportunity

A customer’s next investment creates an opportunity to review the relationship so far. Michael’s approach gives that review commercial significance: what has been achieved, what remains unresolved, and what would justify a further commitment? Those questions connect account development with an assessment of the customer’s circumstances.

Michael brings this approach to BetterCloud’s EMEA expansion, where his priorities include strengthening partnerships and developing regional opportunities. Building on his involvement in IT-Branchen’s cybersecurity policy board and SaaSiest’s customer success executive network, he aims to contribute further perspectives on leadership and technology governance, drawing on the practical decisions businesses face when adopting new tools and establishing responsibility for their use.

Earning the Next Commitment

Michael’s perspective places a continuing obligation on commercial leadership: stay close enough to the customer to know whether the original promise still holds. As needs change and new technologies enter the workplace, that requires teams to revisit assumptions, address concerns, and explain what further investment can reasonably achieve. For Michael, the credibility of the next proposal rests partly on the customer’s experience of the last one.
