A Lawyer Becomes a Storyteller – John Cross’s First Book Is Full of Heart and Humour
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

John Cross spent many years working as a court clerk in Massachusetts. Now retired, he has written his first book, which is a collection of short stories that show his deep understanding of people and life.

John grew up in LaGrange, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. His father was a doctor who cared a lot about school and learning. John worked hard and became an honor student. He went to Cornell University, where he studied English and took writing classes, which gave birth to his passion for storytelling and writing fiction. Then he went to Boston University to become a lawyer and also took some classes in journalism.

After years of watching people navigate their personal struggles in the courtroom, John found a way to connect those experiences with the larger world of fiction. His time as a court clerk gave him the opportunity to hear deeply personal stories from people of all walks of life. He often reflected on how the law could be both a tool for justice and a symbol of human complexity. These reflections became the foundation for his short stories, which are a blend of personal observations and emotional insight. Each story is a window into human nature, drawing from real events but shaped by John’s creative mind. His legal background gives his characters depth, allowing them to tackle personal dilemmas with a sense of realism that readers can relate to.

In his legal career, especially as a clerk of court, John saw both the good and the evil in people. These real-life experiences helped him write honest and powerful stories. His book is full of characters who feel real, people who make mistakes, learn lessons and sometimes even find happiness again.

Though John’s early career was focused on law, his true passion for storytelling continued to grow over time. Writing was not just a hobby for him but a way to communicate the lessons he had learned through years of legal work. As he continued to immerse himself in both his professional career and personal writing projects, John found that the two worlds began to overlap in meaningful ways. The attention to detail that served him well as a lawyer became an asset in his writing, helping him create rich, layered characters and situations that felt grounded in reality. His legal career provided the perfect training ground for a writer, and it was clear that his stories had the kind of depth that comes from years of firsthand experience.

What makes John’s writing so special is how he uses humor to share serious messages. He is inspired by writers like Mark Twain, who also used humor to talk about big ideas. ‘I want to make people laugh, but I also want them to think,’ John says. Compassion and kindness matter the most, according to John.

The stories in his book cover many topics, including family, love, racism, justice and personal growth. In one story, a strict father changes completely when on vacation. In another, a young man faces racism in his own town. Each of the stories teaches something while still being fun to read.

John Cross’s writing comes with clarity, smartness and is full of emotions. This book shows that it is never too late to follow your dream. His stories will make readers laugh, cry, and maybe see life in a different light. This is more than just a book of short stories; it is a gift from someone who has truly lived his life.
