Indonesia Should Welcome the World’s Next Generation of Tech Builders if Malaysia Hesitates

By Jamie McIntyre, Chief Editor and Founder of LUX Property Group

A recent public statement from entrepreneur and former Coinbase Chief Technology Officer Balaji Srinivasan has reignited debate about Southeast Asia’s competition to attract global technology talent, startups, and investment.

Srinivasan, who founded Network School, outlined concerns following an investigation into his Malaysia-based campus after anonymous allegations circulated online. Malaysian authorities reportedly investigated the matter and subsequently confirmed that participants’ travel documentation was in order after checking passports from dozens of countries. Srinivasan nevertheless argued that the episode had damaged investor confidence and announced that future expansion plans in Malaysia would remain on hold while seeking greater certainty and engagement with government.

According to Srinivasan, Network School has already invested more than 100 million Malaysian Ringgit into its Forest City campus, attracting entrepreneurs, engineers, investors, and digital creators from more than 70 countries while supporting local businesses and technology startups.

Whether Malaysia ultimately strengthens its relationship with Network School remains a matter for the Malaysian Government and Network School itself. However, the broader question is one that Indonesia should consider carefully.

A Major Opportunity for Indonesia

If international technology entrepreneurs are seeking a stable, welcoming destination to build innovation communities, Indonesia has an opportunity to position itself as one of the world’s leading destinations.

Indonesia already possesses many of the ingredients required for long-term success:

* A young and growing population.
* One of the world’s largest digital economies.
* Strategic access to Asia-Pacific markets.
* Competitive operating costs.
* A government actively encouraging investment into new economic centres.

Rather than allowing globally recognised technology communities to relocate elsewhere, Indonesia could proactively invite them to establish regional hubs that create employment, attract foreign investment, support universities, and help develop the country’s startup ecosystem.

Nusantara Could Become More Than a Government Capital

Indonesia’s future capital, Nusantara, has often been discussed primarily as the country’s new administrative centre.

However, there is no reason it could not also become an innovation capital.

As part of this vision, proposals have already been put forward by LUX Property Group to develop an eco-resort, mini court, and convention centre within Nusantara. These developments are designed to support not only tourism and government functions but also international business events, legal infrastructure for investors, and global conferences that attract entrepreneurs and innovators.

Alongside government institutions, carefully planned technology precincts could attract:

* Artificial intelligence companies
* Blockchain developers
* Software startups
* Venture capital firms
* Research laboratories
* International universities
* Robotics companies
* Digital education providers

A globally recognised technology campus could complement Indonesia’s long-term vision while helping diversify the city’s economy beyond government administration.

Nesara Bay City Presents Another Possibility

Another location that could benefit from this type of investment is Nesara Bay City, the new master-planned coastal city in South Lombok being developed by LUX Property Group and showcased at NesaraBayCity.com.

The long-term vision for Nesara Bay City extends beyond tourism and residential development. It includes creating a diversified, future-focused city combining:

* Technology companies
* Universities
* Digital nomads
* Entrepreneurs
* Wellness facilities
* Hospitality
* Tourism
* Convention and exhibition infrastructure

Nesara Bay City is being positioned as a next-generation eco-smart city, integrating sustainability, innovation, and lifestyle. With plans for international-standard convention centres, business hubs, and eco-resorts, it is designed to attract global investors, startups, and remote professionals seeking a high-quality environment to live and work.

By integrating innovation with lifestyle, education, tourism, and sustainability, such a city could attract talented people from across Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

A technology-focused campus similar in concept to Network School could become one of several anchor institutions helping establish an internationally connected innovation ecosystem.

Competition for Global Talent is Intensifying

Countries around the world are increasingly competing for mobile entrepreneurs, investors, and skilled professionals.

Digital nomad visas, startup incentives, research partnerships, and special economic zones are becoming common tools used to attract knowledge industries.

Indonesia has already taken important steps in this direction through investment reforms and the development of special economic zones. Continuing to build a reputation for regulatory certainty, openness to innovation, and constructive engagement with international investors could further strengthen its appeal.

An Opportunity Worth Exploring

If Network School or similar organisations decide to expand beyond Malaysia, Indonesia may have an opportunity to begin discussions.

Such discussions would naturally be subject to Indonesian laws, immigration requirements, and investment regulations, while ensuring that any partnership delivers clear benefits for local communities through employment, education, technology transfer, and economic development.

As Southeast Asia’s digital economy continues to expand, countries that successfully combine infrastructure, openness, education, and long-term policy stability are likely to attract an increasing share of global technology investment.

Indonesia has the scale, ambition, and potential to become one of those destinations.

Whether through Nusantara, Nesara Bay City, or other emerging innovation precincts, welcoming world-class technology communities could help accelerate Indonesia’s journey toward becoming one of Asia’s leading centres for entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and global innovation.
