Garuda TV Features Australian National Review Special Report on Indonesia’s New Capital, Nusantara IKN

A special report on Indonesia’s new capital city, Nusantara (IKN), produced by Jamie McIntyre, Chief Editor of the Australian National Review, has been featured by Garuda TV, highlighting growing interest in one of the world’s most ambitious urban development projects.

The report has attracted significant attention from both Indonesians and international audiences eager to learn more about Nusantara, a city that remains relatively unknown outside Indonesia despite the remarkable progress already achieved.

While Nusantara is scheduled to be fully completed by 2045, substantial sections of the city have already been built. Government ministries, administrative offices, major roads, public parks and supporting infrastructure are now operational, with development continuing at a rapid pace.

It is reported that approximately 147,000 people already live within the Nusantara area, with the population expected to grow to around 1.9 million residents by 2045.

A major milestone will occur during 2026, when more than 5,000 Indonesian civil servants are expected to relocate to the completed government ministries and offices. Over the coming years, the Indonesian Government plans a much larger transition, with up to 500,000 government employees and their families ultimately expected to relocate as Nusantara evolves into the nation’s administrative centre.

The Government has indicated that Nusantara is expected to begin operating as Indonesia’s official capital from 2028, with the transition from Jakarta occurring progressively over subsequent years.

Adding to its accessibility, Nusantara’s new international airport is scheduled to open in late 2026, providing direct access to the capital. In the meantime, the nearby city of Balikpapan already serves the region through its modern international airport, which has capacity to handle around 10 million passengers annually and is located approximately two hours from Nusantara by road.

Jamie McIntyre’s special report showcased the city’s striking architecture, wide boulevards, landscaped parks and seamless integration with the surrounding rainforest. Many visitors have described parts of Nusantara as resembling a futuristic city, with some comparing its unique blend of modern design and nature to scenes from the film Avatar.

McIntyre also heads LUX Property Group, which is planning what it describes as Indonesia’s second master-planned city, Nesara Bay City, in South Lombok. Civil works are already underway, with major construction expected to commence during the last quarter of 2026, and the project is targeted for completion around 2031. The mixed-use tourism and lifestyle destination is planned to include hotels, luxury residences, retail precincts, wellness facilities, entertainment venues and a convention centre designed to attract major domestic and international events.

LUX Property Group has also reportedly submitted a proposal to the Indonesian Government to develop a major Convention Centre within Nusantara (IKN), alongside an adjoining eco-resort. The proposal includes a six-level resort hotel, approximately 100 luxury villas and residences, a large beach-style lagoon and wave pool, wellness facilities and supporting tourism infrastructure. If approved, the project would support Nusantara’s ambition to become not only Indonesia’s administrative capital but also a leading destination for international conferences, exhibitions, business events and eco-tourism, while complementing LUX Property Group’s broader vision of helping develop Indonesia’s next generation of world-class master-planned destinations.

As Indonesia continues its rise as one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies, and with many economists projecting it could become one of the world’s four largest economies by 2050, Nusantara is increasingly attracting the attention of international investors, business leaders, media organisations and travellers interested in witnessing the creation of one of the world’s newest capital cities.

Garuda TV’s decision to feature the Australian National Review special report reflects the growing national and international fascination with Nusantara. While construction will continue for many years, the city has already evolved from a bold vision into a functioning capital that is steadily welcoming residents, government institutions and major investment, offering the world a glimpse of Indonesia’s long-term ambitions for the future.
